Ultra Vesta is the "Besta"

Last year I used a backpack hydration system for all of my long training runs and also the first 16 miles of the Woodstock 50K.  Did it work? Yes.  Did it serve it's purpose? Yes.  Did I love it? No.  Was it the ultimate pack for me? No, and considering I have scars from where it chafed I knew I needed to find a solution.  This is not to say it was not a good pack, it was well built, but it did not fit the curves of this women and I never could get the adjustment "just" right.  It also had a reservoir, and during Woodstock this was a huge pain to refill, so I knew I wanted a bottle option that was easily refillable at aid stations.

In my search I found the Jenny Collection Ultra Vesta from Ultimate Direction.  Made by a woman, for women and worn by Jenny Jurek and 2014 Female Ultra Runner of the Year Michele Yates.  Points for Ultimate Direction, they did not just take a vest, make it purple and call it a women's vest.  The biggest problem I had was that I found this vest on the internet in late fall and had to wait until it's release in January to actually order it.  After waiting so "patiently" (aka stalking the website and Ultimate Direction twitter account for the launch), I really was hoping that the Ultra Vesta did not disappoint and leave me chafed like the last one.

I have had the Ultra Vesta now for 3 months, and have worn it for my long runs including several 18's, a 20, several 3+ hours on the trails and a handful of runs over 12 miles.  I have worn it in -15 degree whether and 70 degree weather (thanks Michigan for that weather swing so I could do a full review).

Initial thoughts:

  • After unpacking the box of course I had to hop back on the treadmill and run a few more miles just to try it out.  My first thoughts were it was well made, sturdy, easy to fit right with a few pulls of the straps and lightweight.  I got a M/L since I was right on the edge of the sizes and I am glad I went up a size b/c it fits perfect with summer clothes and also over layers of winter clothes.
First test run on the treadmill in a tank top & no extra Body Glide w/ no issues
After testing it out over the last few months....
Pros:
  • Front zipper pocket: This is actually large enough to hold my iPhone in a LifeProof case & chapstick (I like to have easy access to my phone, mostly for pictures but also in case I need to use it)
  • Adjustable front straps: Not only do they adjust length wise but they slide up and down the piping as well so the straps are in the perfect place for a women's body (read not directly across the chest region and smashing the "girls")
  • Adjustable side straps: With 2 side straps as well it makes it easier to get the fit that is right for you.
  • Bottle placement: The small lightweight bottles fit nicely right above the chest and right below the shoulder blades when adjusted properly.

Once properly adjusted the bottles sit much higher so it's not squishing anything and the straps can be adjusted to go above and below the chest.

  •  Sleek: Seriously without the bladder in the vest, even with other stuff like TP, Picky Bars and spare gloves it fits nicely against the back and is not bulky or have a "back pack" type feel.

No added bulk even when it has stuff in the back pouches
  • Storage: There are tons of pockets, including a front zipper pouch, front velcro closed pouch, 2 large compartments on the back and a small zippered pouch for a key or other little objects
Front Pockets/View
Front w/ pockets "packed" -The 2 straps on the front of the vest slide up and down the piping for the perfect fit
What is packed in those closed pockets

Back compartments & bungee for clothing storage:

Small zipper pouch & the extra hair tie included (it's the little things people!)

  • Chafing or lack of: So far I have had no issues with chafing and now that it is properly adjusted for warm weather running (tank tops and humidity) I do not see an issue in the future either.  The material is soft and does not have an harsh seams that rub which makes it really comfortable to wear.

3.5 hour trail run in a tech shirt w/ no issues
Cons:
  • Bottle Size/Fluid Capacity: Because of where the bottles sit you are limited to the smaller sized bottles.  This is not saying you cannot throw a 20 oz bottle in there, it just may jab you in the chin a few times.  The 10 oz bottles will not be a problem on race day either since aide stations are close enough together that 20 oz will be enough.  However, on unsupported long runs 20 oz is not enough unless you are looping several times.  There are 2 fixes for these however both do require separate purchases.  The 70 oz reservoir, then I could fill the small bottles through out the run or the new Body Bottles that are 14 oz (adding an extra 8 total onces, and possibly carry 2 spare bottles in one of the back compartments so I would have 48 total oz of water)  This is a minor detail though in my opinion since it can be remedied with the additional purchases. (I will update my review once I pick up these items and try it on a few unsupported, non looping long runs)

Overall I am really happy with the Jenny Collection Ultra Vesta, it was worth both the wait and the money in my opinion. I would recommend it to any women looking for a new hydration system.

UPDATE:  The Jenny Ultra Vesta has done a good job in all of the training runs and the self supported 50k on a looped course.  It still has not caused any chafing and held up well so far.  My concern is still the smaller bottles (I did purchase both the reservoir and the body bottles and have used both).  As I pack and plan for the Mohican I am having issues trying to figure out where to put the Tailwind Nutrition, where to put water and how to carry as little as possible since there will be aid stations ever 4-8 miles.  As of now it looks like I will have Tailwind in the front 2 bottles and carry the water in the reservoir, this is not actually ideal, 20 oz of Tailwind is not enough to get me to my 2nd drop bag so I will have to mix at an aid station or on the trail, which can be a pain with the smaller bottles.  I had thought about just carrying the reservoir with Tailwind, but then what happens when I want to rinse off or just want water, I wish it was a double chambered reservoir.  I will update once I finish the Mohican, by then I may have it figured it out.

Have you checked out the new Jenny Collection Ultra Vesta?  Do you have any questions about the vest that I missed in my review?

(Note: I purchased the Ultra Vesta with my own money and reviewed it without compensation from Ultimate Direction)

Simple Hydration Bottle Review

I saw the Simple Hydration bottle online several months ago, but it was winter and I do not run with liquids under 6 miles so I was not in a hurry to order.  However since Michigan has finally warmed up to 80+ degrees and nasty humidity I figured now was a good time to get one.  It shipped quickly and I received it only a few days after ordering.

Run #1: I barely made it 100 ft with the Simple Hydration Bottle tucked into my waistband.  It bounced and it felt like my pants were falling down.  I pulled it out of the waistband and hand carried it for 3 miles till I looped back to my car.  Now I normally hate carrying anything but this bottle was pretty comfy.  Now a hand carry is still not my 1st choice of hydration systems but this bottle would work in a pinch.

(See perfect thumb spot and "molded" for a hand)

Why did it bounce? My first thought was my outfit choice, my Brooks PR Mesh Skorts do not have a drawstring waistband, and on a normal run when they aren't holding up 13 oz of water the waist band always feels "loose".  I did ask Simple Hydration on Twitter why it bounced and they responded quickly and just like I thought that they key was a drawstring.

Run #2: New outfit which included a pair of Oiselle Roga Shorts with a drawstring and I had an almost bounce free run. I say almost because the first mile there was a slight bounce when the bottle was heavy from ice and the full 13 oz of water it holds, but it wasn't enough to make me think the bottle would bounce out or my pants would fall down like Run #1.

(Awesome hydration system if your wardrobe has drawstrings)

Overall I would recommend the bottle if you are looking for a "Simple Hydration" option that does not need belts or packs.  I plan on using mine now on my shorter runs when I wear my shorts and do not carry much anyways.  I would probably even consider using it on longer runs if Brooks decides to perfect their PR Mesh Skort and add a drawstring.  I will be ordering another one soon for my husband who has started running and I know all of his shorts have drawstrings! Oh and if you like Simple Hydration on Facebook or follow them on Twitter keep your eyes pealed for awesome deals!!

**Please note I purchased the Simple Hydration bottle with my own money and a coupon code.  The review and opinions are my own and I was no way influenced by the nice folks over at Simple Hydration

New Running Store in the D!

For those of you that have never had a chance to run in Detroit let me just say it is an amazing run, full of history and so much hidden beauty.  I was very excited when I heard about a new running store opening up in Midtown called RUN Detroit. I followed them on twitter and Facebook and waited patiently for them to open.  Detroit is a special place for me, I have fond memories of Boblo and Corktown/Tiger Stadium when I was a kid, grew up listening to my mom and grandparents talk about Belle Isle, and I want my kids to grow up seeing all that Downtown Detroit has to offer.  I want the city to thrive and I want the everyone to see the beauty in our amazing city. (That is a ton of "wants")  Ok, back to the running store, they announced on social media their Grand Opening would be June 1 and would include their 1st group run.  Originally I was planning on heading to the Toledo Zoo but with the forecast calling for thunderstorms so we changed our plans to head there on Sunday and I was able to make the opening.

The store is not a mega store, it has a small selection of clothing and shoes.
Just by looking over them though, clearly quality trumps quantity at RUN Detroit because they had some awesome shoes and clothes.  They carry a full line of Nuun, Amphipod, Swiftwick socks and a variety of shoes and clothes from the big brands including Brooks and Saucony.

They have a great selection of hydration/fuel.  I was so excited to see Nuun! This will be the closest place I can buy it locally.

RUN Detroit was kind enough to offer Avalon Baked goods, Motor City Beer, and coffee/Nuun/water as well for their first run.
JFM enjoying some delicious blueberry coffee cake from Avalon

Each Saturday they plan to run a 3, 6, & 10 mile run starting at the store at 8 am.  They will be offering different routes and even plan to run parts of the upcoming Detroit 1/2 and Full Marathon courses.
(Justin introducing himself and explaining how the group runs will work)

While enjoying the scenery we missed the 6 mile route turn and ended up with this 9.33 mile run (the another .25 mile cool down walk back to the store)
After Be Nice yoga was there to help runners with some stretching and yoga techniques.

Free Pint glass...love swag that holds beer or Nuun!

John and I after our tour of the city.  Besides the heat and humidity it was fantastic!

Me sporting my RUN Detroit tee at Eastern Market later that day!

I really enjoyed my first experience at RUN Detroit, the co-owners Justin and Alia were pretty cool just to chat with after the run, both knowledgeable from experience.  We chatted with Justin about Ultras for a little bit (apparently toasted bread makes a pb&j easier to eat on an Ultra Run-who knew).  I will definitely be heading back for another group run and will be on the look out for hopefully some "Beer Miles" that the husband and I can do together from the store since it is located right across from Motor City Beer.

Have you ever ran in or visited Downtown Detroit?  If you are from the area where is your favorite place to go in the city?

My love for mantra bracelets...Endorphin Warrior Review...

Last year before Bayshore I discovered a mantra bracelet at Gone For A Run that said "It's all about the journey".  It was perfect at the time because I needed to remember that even though I was going in with high expectations and a huge time goal, it was about getting there, getting across the finish line.  The 9 months between giving birth and toeing that line were tough.  Emotionally I was struggling to adjust to becoming a mom of 3 so quickly after becoming a mom to 2.  I was struggling with the postpartum emotions and hormones that make the first few months after the births tough ones for me.  Every step I took during training helped me become stronger as a person and as a mother.  Running really helped me conquer those tough months.  Physically 2 back to back pregnancies had taken it's toll, running was hard and the extra weight that I never lost with pregnancy #2 and the new weight added with pregnancy #3 didn't make running again easier since I was hovering around 200 lbs when I started running again in October 2011.   I needed the reminder around my wrist that running and finishing Bayshore was not about the time goal or the medal, it was about the journey I had been on over the last 6 years.  The journey to becoming a wife, the journey to becoming a mother to 1, 2 and then 3 boys, the journey to finding myself again and redefining who I was instead of getting lost in the new roles I had in life, the journey to becoming a runner.
My mantra bracelet I wore to Bayshore 2012
About a week before the Boston Marathon, when I was having serious Boston fever and dreaming of one day qualifying for the Holy Grail of races, I decided it was time for a new mantra bracelet.  This time I chose an Endorphin Warrior bracelet with just one word on it "BELIEVE".  I wanted that reminder that I need to believe in myself, that it is possible for me to achieve the goals I set for myself.
My original mantra bracelet a year later, with new cords in Boston colors and my BELIEVE warrior bracelet.
However, by the time my BELIEVE bracelet arrived the day after the Boston Marathon Tragedy the word took on a whole new meaning. I now see it as a reminder to believe there is still good in the world; believe that goodness with always triumph over evil; believe that the evil in the world will not turn the hearts of the good, cold and hard; believe that as a country we will come together and not just in times of tragedy; believe that as human beings we will respect one another and embrace our differences that make us unique; believe that we as a nation can stop pointing fingers and trying to blame someone and instead work towards a common goal of a better America....I am choosing every day to believe in something, including myself.

Review of the bracelet itself: I LOVE it! It is a simple leather bracelet with the nickel plated metal tag.  I used the sizing help on their website and the bracelet fits perfect.  I would definitely order another one or recommend them to a friend.  If you follow them on Twitter and Facebook they always post codes for a percentage off too which is pretty nice.

**Disclaimer: I have no affiliation with Endorphin Warrior (unless they want to make me part of their team ;) )  I ordered the bracelet after seeing it on the web somewhere and it was purchased with my own money...

#recoverymiles #sunshine #runhappy #procompression #brooksrunning #marathonstick

Who can resist getting in a few easy recovery miles when the sun is shining?  I know I couldn't so I got in 2 miles around my neighborhood before I worked on my sore muscles with the Marathon Stick.  I was a bit sore from the tough long run the day before.  It was a beautiful day and helped to remind me that there is still so much good in the world and so much good in life, even though my heart still aches for those effected by the Boston Marathon tragedy.

My newest love = Trail Running

This weekend I joined some running friends out on the Potawatomi Trails to conquer some hills and some miles.  I have never actually run on these trails, or have I ever run longer then 6 miles on a trail surface, so this was a completely new experience for me.  Since we would be out there a while I traded my normal Amphipod running belt for a Camelbak Octane XCT.  It was one of the toughest runs (I did just over 13, runner John did 24! 11 of which were solo! Now that is bada*s!) I had ever done but I will say one of the best.  The trails were challenging, the up, the down, the leaves that hid the rocks and sticks, but it was also so beautiful, so peaceful and calm.  My Camelbak came in handy to not only hydrate me (I drank 40+ oz of water on the trail yesterday), but to hold my 1/2 zip since I was way to warm out there (even with just a tank, tech tee and arm sleeves I was over dressed for me and was drenched and freezing by the end of the run).  I loved it out there, the adventure of a new trail, the hills, the different challenges then a road run help to keep running fun and interesting for me.  I am hoping to conquer Bayshore and then find some more time on the trails for a bit...

UPDATED! Won an adjustable nonslip headband from @busybeeheadbands and it arrived today! Love it! #nonslip #gear #smallstepsseriouschafing

Update 3/20/13 for a review:
A few weeks ago I won a Busy Bee Headband on their Facebook page.  I was so excited, I have been wearing similar non slip headbands but after awhile the elastic stretches and they just do not fit and start to slip.  I have heard wonderful things about the owner Tracy from several people who reside/run in Carmel where she is located.  The contest ended on Tuesday and by Friday I had my headband, can we say SUPER FAST shipping!  The first thing I noticed was how soft the inner fabric was.  The elastic band is also fully adjustable so I was able to get the perfect fit after only a few minor adjustments.  I had not worn it on a run till yesterday though (since it is still cold enough here in Michigan to wear my ear warmers).  I will say that both yesterday and today I was able to run a total of 10.5 miles with my new Busy Bee Headband and not once did I need to adjust it during the run nor did it move.  When the time comes to purchase a new headband I will be ordering from Busy Bee.

Pro Compression Socks Review and Giveaway!

My Pro Compression Collection (minus black they are in the wash)

I have ran and raced in compression socks for years. For me it always felt better to run in them, and my legs always appreciated the tightness of compression socks. I even wore compression socks when I was pregnant to keep the swelling in my ankles down. The only thing I hated about compression socks was there were not many "options", I could have either white (which would end up dingy and gross after a few months) or black.  A few months ago I stumbled upon Pro Compression on Facebook and was excited to see the colors, oh the wonderful colors of compression socks.  Now if only they fit and worked as good as the other brand I had been using for years.  I figured I needed a new pair of socks anyways and even if they did not fit perfect for training they would at least come in handy to wear after long runs so I ordered the limited edition Michellie Jones pink and stars socks.  They arrived in just a few days and fit great. They were a bit long but after some wear and a few washings it was not a problem at all.  I have since retired all of my boring white and black compression socks and replaced them with some fun colored Pro Compression socks including my latest pair of "Lucky Socks" that I hope will help carry my to a sub 2 half marathon in a few weeks.

Why would one consider switching to compression socks?  Here is a little blurb from Pro Compression's website explaining a little about graduated compression socks and what they do.

"What will your socks do for my legs and feet?"

From the moment you slip on a pair of PRO Compression socks you will benefit from the science and comfort behind the ‘graduated compression’ technology that is felt mainly around the ankle.
Whether at rest, playing a round of golf or running a marathon, your PRO Compression socks are working to circulate blood back to your heart and lungs. With more efficient circulation comes less fatigue and your tired muscles are replenished with fresh oxygen and nutrients to reduce soreness and give you the extra stamina needed to exert yourself at the fullest.
Sporting my limited edition Pro Compression at PoHo in January
I personally feel compression socks work during and after a run.  During the run I feel a little extra support on my legs as opposed to when I am wearing ankle socks.  After a longer run I will wear a new pair and notice there is always less muscle fatigue and soreness the next day, as opposed to how my legs can feel when I forget.  I also wear my compression socks if I will be at work standing for a long period of time or if I am traveling a will be sitting for a long period of time.

I contacted Pro Compression and not only were they kind enough to give my readers a code good for 40% off a pair of Marathon Socks but they are sponsoring a giveaway and one lucky reader will get a FREE pair of Marathon Socks (size and color of your choice!)

To receive 40% Use Coupon Code: BLG13

Enter to win your very own pair here just by leaving a comment telling me what color you would pick if you won.  Contest ends March 18th at 12:00 am.
a Rafflecopter giveaway

(Pro Compression is sponsoring the giveaway with one free pair of marathon socks however the opinions expressed are my own and I have purchased all of the Pro Compression socks I wear)

Look what I found on clearance #hotpink #locklaces I have been wanting to try them since I hate to tie my shoes (esp at 4:45 am) ....they look so awesome in my Purple #brooksrunning #pureflow #smallstepsseriouschafing

I have seen Lock Laces before and know several runners swear by them, but I never could understand. I never really had a problem with my shoes coming untied and with the few pairs I did I just rubbed the laces with a candle to stop them from slipping.  However when I was "grocery" shopping at Meijer the other day I came across a pair of Lock Laces on clearance...WHAT!  They were HOT pink and $4 I could not pass them up.  Not because I "needed" them but the promise of never have to tie my shoes is very appealing especially because at 4:45 am I HATE tying them.  Of course I put them on my Purple Brooks PureFlow right away.  Basically all you do is lace them in like you normally would, add the lock and then the closure and you are done.  I have yet to run in them but have used them on the cycle trainer and the elliptical and all I can say is "I will never tie my shoes again".  Seriously, I can get my laces tight enough (the cord is almost like a little bungie cord) and I really do not have to tie my shoe.  These Lock Laces are going to save me at least 3 minutes every morning, at 4:45 am that means something.  Now I understand the Lock Laces rage...they are awesome! (And a bonus if you check out their website they have a TON of colors so you can match or coordinate with any pair of shoes)

RunnerBox Review

While scrolling through hashtags on Instagram I came across a RunnerBox.  I was intrigued and headed over to their website to check them out. ( http://therunnerbox.com ) A bi-monthly shipment filled with goodies the runners and triathletes would enjoy...very interesting and intriguing because I am always looking to try out different products but can never justify buying a whole box of something to try it because there is always the "fear" I won't like it and I just wasted money and a whole box of a product. They had a special "Valentine's Day" box for $18 plus $5.00 shipping via USPS so I decided now would be a great time to try them out. (It looks like this deal is no longer available and the gift box has returned to the regular price of $20)

I placed my order late Friday night and quickly received a confirmation and a shipping notice.  After looking into the company a bit further I noticed they were located in Michigan and my RunnerBox quickly arrived on Monday with the mail.

Opening the RunnerBox

Packed up nicely

All the goodies (I will need to improve on my product photography :) )

I was excited about the products inside because other then the Honey Stingers Gel and the Sports Beans I had not tried any of the other goodies in there.  Along with the nutritional goodies there was also a headphone cord wrapper which is always handy to have around since my YurBuds cords are always getting tangled.

Now is it worth it?

I checked out the internet for prices on the retail value of the RunnerBox and did my best to estimate how much each product was worth.  It is a best estimate because some products cannot be purchased individually, some products also would require a shipping cost if not available locally someplace like REI or a local running shop and I also used the lowest price I found on individually sold products (so these can be found cheaper if purchased in a larger quantity/case).

Jelly Belly Sports Beans $1.25 (sold individually)
Bonk Breaker $3.00 (sold individually)
Honey Stinger Gel $1.30 (sold individually)
GU Chomps $2.20 (sold individually)
2 Packets Cocoa Via Drink Mix ~$1.13 each (these are only sold in 30 pack cases or you can request a free sample from the makers website for $2.95 shipping and handling)
1 Day of Mila Seeds ~$1.34 (approximate cost of a one day supply if you purchase the larger bags sold on Amazon)
1 Packet Emergan C ElectroMix $.22 (sold in a package of 30 - I was really excited about this one, we love Emergan C in this house and I didn't even know they had a sports drink mix)
Get Active Tea $.33 (sold in container of 36 for ~$12.00 - Another product I was really excited to try, I love Tea and one that is good for me is a bonus!)
Sports Legs Capsules $1.99 for an individual packet (www.sportslegs.com it claims to minimize soreness if taken after exercise, I have yet to research or try this yet but I will let you know after Saturday's long run followed by a 5K)
2 Packets of UCan Sports Drink (1 Pomegranate Blueberry and 1 Protein Enhanced Chocolate) $2.50 each (price per packet if purchased in the 6 pack trial box)

Total "Retail" Value: $18.89 + the headphone cord holder

My opinion (which is my own, I purchased the box without any prompting from the company, and am just a satisfied customer) is that yes the RunnerBox is worth the cost and I will be signing up for a subscription (I am thinking about waiting till they launch the monthly box because in all honestly I highly doubt I will be able to ration the new products for 2 whole months).  Even at $20 + $5 shipping I am still getting a "deal" after you factor in time, labor, packaging etc that the company must also cover.  The company also has a TriBox with products geared for Triathletes as well.

A few "essentials"

In addition to proper fitting shoes and decent clothing (truly doesn't have to be anything fancy but something you are comfortable in and works even though I prefer to stay away from cotton) there are 3 things that I consider essentials in my running bag.

1) Body Glide: It comes in a handy deodorant type stick and can be applied easily to an area that is prone to chafing during a run.  I tend to use it near any seam or band that may rub and have also used it on the back of my ankles if I am having issues with shoes.  I forgot to put it on on Tuesday before our early morning and the under arm chafing from my arm sleeves is not comfortable.

2) Warm FX: Similar to Icy Hot and made by the Body Glide it helps to loosen up tight/sore muscles.  This is by no means a replacement for traditional ice and heat therapy but it works in a pinch.  I prefer this one because it also comes in a handy deodorant type stick and can be applied easily.

3) The Stick: This is a recent addition and I could kick myself for not getting it sooner!  When I used to visit the gym regularly I would borrow their foam rollers, and they are fantastic as well.  When I started working out from home more, I still was hesitant to spend the money on The Stick and just used a rolling pin.  It worked but was not flexible at all.  So I sucked it up and The Stick arrived Monday.  I have used it daily and will continue to.  I can easily roll out my leg muscles as well as my arms and back that are very sore from the push up challenge.

What I consider essentials
What do you consider to be an "essential" in your running bag?
